The Energy Guy is John Nicholas. I started in the Residential Energy field in 2010 after a career in Health Care Administration. In health care, I had worked with many employees, the public and various state and federal agencies. I had the experience of making payroll twice a month, collecting bills, and dealing with the customers that felt between a rock and a hard place when their family member became sick.
My goals were to work with people, doing something that has a technical aspect and involves not being in an office the whole day.
I received my HERS Rater training at Kansas Building Science Institute in Manhattan, Kansas. I spent several months completing the field training and practicum. That was the spring in 2010. I started in business as Efficient Energy Savers. I became a Level I Thermographer with training in the fall of 2010. In the fall of 2012, I completed the field work and passed the test to qualify as a Level II Thermographer. My supervising Level III Thermographer is The Snell Group of Barre, VT. At that time I started a separate business as Kansas Infrared Imaging to provide Thermal Imaging Services to commercial, industrial and other local businesses.
Over the past five years, I have learned a lot about residential energy, thermography and how most people view the use of energy in their homes. Several times over the first few months, I arrived at a home for a Home Energy Audit and was greeted with some variation of ‘Hello, Energy Guy!’ That greeting or nickname has stayed around. It just made sense to re-brand the business as ‘The Energy Guy.’
In February, 2015 I received certification as a Passive House Verifier from (PHIUS) Passive House Institute United States.
